The history of the Caffe’ Fantoni began in 1842 with Giovanni who created the recipe and shape of the well-known Sfogliatine, and it went on with his grandson, Commendator Marcello, a very creative pastry chef who was a friend of Trilussa, Fogazzaro, Simoni, Rensi – who used to go to the café along with economists and artist for huge coffee breaks.
The café has marked the events of Italy with cakes that are still produced: the “Biscotti Umberto” in honour of the Prince who fought at the Quadrato, the “Torta della Pace” (“Cake of the Peace”) dedicated to the armistice of Villafranca in 1859, the celebrated “Acqua di Fiume” (“Water of River”) for the enterprise of D’Annunzio in 1919, exalted by the Vate in a famous letter.
Restored following the liberty stylistic patterns of 1923, when it was first renovated, it has been used as a film set for movies such as ” I quattro del getto tonante” and “Fango e Gloria”.
It keeps the treasure of 170 years of history, creativity and taste.
